Delight your audiences with this advanced-intermediate arrangement for woodwind quintet of the third movement, the dynamic "Scherzo," from Franz Schubert's String Quartet No. 14, "Death and the Maiden"--instantly downloadable for your next performance. This arrangement is perfect for recitals, contests, competitions, background dinner music gigs, weddings, educational outreach, and formal events. This transcription of a Romantic-era work was written for the most advanced ensembles, from college groups to professional quintets. As always, I have included an alternate bass clarinet part in lieu of a missing bassoon. Originally scored for strings, I hope you enjoy this unique transcription for winds.
Austrian composer Franz Schubert, in his fiery "Scherzo," the third movement from his fourteenth string quartet, adapted the principal rhythmic and melodic material from one of his earlier, rustic Austrian Ländler (German dances) for piano, transfiguring a simple folk dance into something ominous. The movement is dominated by heavy, jabbing offbeat accents and a persistent, aggressive dotted rhythm that pushes forward with relentless momentum. Although the Trio offers some warm relief, that quickly vanishes as the harsh, pounding D-minor Scherzo returns in full force, before hurtling directly into the frantic tarantella finale (Presto), movement four. Originally scored for string quartet, I hope you enjoy this unique setting for wind quintet.
COMING SOON: In the next year, look for the remaining two movements as I complete my set from Schubert’s chamber music masterwork. You can purchase them separately or the four-movement set. Save 50% when you purchase the entire quartet. The “Presto” is available now from CMP. Click here to purchase it.
