Ubi Caritas

From Quatre Motets sur des Thèmes Grégoriens, Opus 10

For Woodwind Quintet

Delight your audiences with this intermediate setting of Maurice Duruflé's gorgeous motet, "Ubi Caritas," from his Quatre Motets sur des Thèmes Grégoriens, Opus 10, in a digital download arrangement for woodwind quintet. This transcription of a mid-20th-century choral work is perfect for recitals, Holy Week programs, Easter services/concerts, funerals, or background dinner music gigs. This arrangement was written for most ensembles, ranging from advanced high school ensembles to professional woodwind quintets. As always, I have included an alternate bass clarinet part in lieu of a missing bassoon.

Maurice Duruflé wrote his four sacred polyphonic motets in 1960 based on the 8th-century Gregorian themes. The opening lines of the text translate to "Where charity and love are." The tune has been featured regularly in Maundy Thursday and Holy Thursday services in Western churches for decades. Duruflé's harmonies are lush and serene, sometimes described as almost Impressionistic, and his text painting is exceptional. Originally a revered choral music classic, I hope you enjoy this unique setting for winds of this sumptuous French choral masterwork.
